Shilda Bhoi has cultivated Ing Makhir ginger in Sahsniang village since 2012, using traditional methods without pesticides. Planted in April, tended through the monsoon, harvested in January at peak potency. She also grows Lakadong turmeric and paddy, and runs a fishery - working with the land, not against it.

Shilda's Story

Can you tell us about yourself and your farming journey?

My name is Shilda Bhoi and I am from Sahsniang village in the Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, India. I started farming in 2012, and from 2013 I have been earning benefits every year from growing Ing Makhir ginger.

How do you grow your ginger?

I grow my crops without using pesticides, following organic cultivation practices. I prepare the land in March and start planting in April. From July, we begin cleaning and removing unwanted plants. We take good care of the crops throughout the monsoon season.

When do you harvest?

Harvesting is done in December, January and February — this is when the ginger's aroma is at at their peak. Timing matters. You cannot rush it.

What else do you grow?

In addition to Ing Makhir ginger, I also grow Lakadong turmeric and paddy. I have a fishery as well. The land here supports many things if you take care of it.

What does farming mean to you?

Since 2012, I have earned benefits every year from this work. It supports my family and gives me a livelihood I can depend on. I take good care of the crops, and they take care of me.
